DCCC International Alumni Panel – Journey to Success
It was a great pleasure to visit Delaware County Community College as a proud alumnus to serve on a panel for international students. I recounted my journey from a wide-eyed young immigrant to a strange land to finally figuring out this “American Dream” thing, starting with a visit to the admissions office to DCCC (too many) years ago.
As a returning non-traditional student, I did not know what to expect. Even though I had been living in the US for years, I was still not confident with my English language skills because I had never completed any level of formal education up to that point. I was surprised that the college was judgment-free and offered all the help I need to move forward and upward in my life’s journey. For that I am forever grateful.
I am very honored to be invited back to share my story and provide some advice to other international students who faces unique sets of challenges. Now that I am an educator myself — especially in a diverse and international environment — I believe we need to do more to help students succeed so they can achieve their own American Dreams.
Look forward to next time, as always!
